Q: Should I use coolant with CBN Milling inserts?

A: Generally, NO. For milling Cast Iron and Hardened Steel, we recommend running Dry (or with compressed air). Coolant creates “Thermal Shock” as the hot insert exits the cut and is blasted by cold fluid, which causes micro-cracking. Dry machining usually yields the most stable tool life.

 

Q: What is the difference between CBN Turning and CBN Milling grades?

A: Toughness. Turning is often continuous, so turning grades prioritize wear resistance. Milling is highly interrupted (impact), so Sundi CBN Milling grades are engineered with higher binder toughness to resist breaking under impact.

Q: Can CBN mill Aluminum?

A: No. For Aluminum milling, please use our Sundi PCD Milling Inserts. CBN is chemically compatible only with Ferrous (Iron-based) materials. Using CBN on Aluminum will result in built-up edge and poor performance.
